Find your own reading pace

Simple math. Room for real life.

Reading time in minutes = words ÷ words per minute. For example, 1,000 words at 200 words/min takes about 5 minutes. Twenty pages at 250 words per page, read at 250 words/min, takes about 20 minutes.

The default 238 words/min comes from an adult English silent nonfiction average in Brysbaert’s 2019 review. It is a starting assumption, not your personal target. Difficult material, taking notes, and rereading can need more time.

A few useful answers

How many words are on a page?

There is no fixed number. This calculator starts with an editable assumption of 250. Text size, margins, columns, images, and book format change the actual count.

Is my pasted text uploaded?

No. Counting happens in this tab. Pasted text is not saved to history, sent to a server, or placed in the URL. Reloading or leaving the page clears it.

Can I use my own pace?

Yes. Edit the pace field, or take a reading speed test and choose “Use my pace to estimate time” from your result.
