Context, not competition
There’s more
than one good pace.
An average describes a group. It does not set your goal.
What the research reports
Marc Brysbaert’s 2019 review estimates average adult English silent reading at 238 words/min for nonfiction and 260 for fiction. It reports an oral-reading average of 183 words/min. The reported range covering most adults reading English nonfiction silently is 175–300 words/min. These are group findings, not individual pass/fail boundaries. Give your own result context
A single passage is one observation. A familiar topic, a difficult sentence, interruptions, or reading in another language can change it. Checking a contract and enjoying a story also call for different kinds of attention.
If you choose the optional understanding check, use its answers as extra context. If you missed important details, try another passage more deliberately. A higher number is not automatically a better result.
Use the number for something useful
Estimate the time you need for your next reading task. Leave room for notes and breaks. A three-passage personal baseline may give you a broader snapshot than a single attempt, although our practice passages are not calibrated assessment materials.
